Continuing On (4)

Sometimes I find myself getting so caught up counting down to new releases that I forget about some of the books and series that I'm looking forward to continuing on.  So recently I went back through and checked in with some of my favorites to see what was going on.  I'll admit I was surprised (in a good way) to find that new installments had come out within a series I'd enjoyed.  So rather than counting down in these posts, I decided to list some titles that have come out that I need to back track and read in order to catch up.  Here are just a few...

Catch Up #1:  The Calling (Darkness Rising, #2) by Kelley Armstrong

I shouldn't have let myself fall behind on this one!  With the third installment having come out last month I've got to get in the game so I don't miss out.  Armstrong had me on the edge of my seat with her cliffhanger in the series opener, The Gathering, and I want to dig in and see where she'll take us next.

Catch Up #2:   Override (Glitch, #2) by Heather Anastasiu

This is the book that started these posts.  I went to check online for a release date for this title only to find that it's already on the shelves!  The third in the series, Shutdown will be following close on its heels in July and I'm not going to let it slip away.  I want to see if the gang can get their revolution together and bring down the bad guys!

Catch Up #3:  Accused (Ganzfield, #4) by Kate Kaynak

"We have ways of making you talk."

Someone in the government knows about Ganzfield... and he has special reasons to target Maddie.

So its not that I forgot about this series.  I just came into discovering the Ganzfield series a little late and I'm doing my best now to get caught up as quickly as I can.  I did manage to get myself a copy of this book and have already started it and will posting a review soon.  Kaynak is a machine and has popped out Operative and Soul Mate already, with Solitary releasing this year as well.  Its a lot to get through but I'm loving this series so its no hard feat.  I'm not sure how Kaynak has managed to keep everything going, keep the material constantly exciting and interesting, not to mention coming up with all these crazy ideas for how to further the plot and keep things moving forward, but somehow she's done it and I'm hoping has no plans to stop any time soon.

Catch Up #4:  Hallowed (Unearthly, #2) by Cynthia Hand

For months Clara Gardner trained to face the fire from her visions, but she wasn't prepared for the choice she had to make that day. And in the aftermath, she discovered that nothing about being part angel is as straightforward as she thought.

I don't want this series to end!  I've got this sequel on my Kindle already but was waiting for Boundless, the third and final installment in the series to come out so I could bang them out all at once.  But of course I'm slacking and now have to catch up.  From what I've heard the series ending was great but bittersweet...I'm looking forward to seeing for myself if this is true.

Countdown: January 2013 (5)

January is one of my very months out of the year.  It always feels like a fresh start.  The crazy holiday season has drawn to a close, it's possible (depending on where you live) that the weather is still holding steady and not causing too many problems for those of us a with a commute to work, and there's just something about curling up with a good book during this month that makes me very happy.  I've usually got a few titles to choose from during this month due to my wonderful friends and family gifting me with something they know I love and hold dear to my heart.  The hardest part is usually deciding what to read first and how to stop myself from trying to read them all at once!  So with all these great titles coming out in this January I think us readers will have our work cut out for us.  How we'll find the time to get through all of these amazing titles is beyond me, but I'm certainly going to do my best!

Countdown Pick #1:  What We Saw At Night by Jacquelyn Mitchard (01/08/2013)

Like the yearning, doomed young clones in Ishiguro's Never Let Me Go, three teenagers with XP (a life-threatening allergy to sunlight) are a species unto themselves. As seen through the eyes of 16-year-old Allie Kim, they roam the silent streets, looking for adventure, while others sleep. When Allie's best friend introduces the trio to Parkour, the stunt-sport of running and climbing off forest cliffs and tall buildings (risky in daylight and potentially deadly by darkness), they feel truly alive, equal to the "daytimers."
 
On a random summer night, while scaling a building like any other, the three happen to peer into an empty apartment and glimpse an older man with what looks like a dead girl. A game of cat-and-mouse ensues that escalates through the underground world of hospital confinement, off-the-grid sports, and forbidden love. Allie, who can never see the light of day, discovers she's the lone key to stopping a human monster.

So I'm confused and yet still intrigued with this one.  I'm not sure if it's because I'm lacking the knowledge on Never Let Me Go, or what but I'm not quite sure if I'm supposed to be familiar with this type of character or if it's OK that I'm new to this whole thing, but I still for some reason want to check this book out.  I usually find myself going into mysteries with a slight hesitation because once I get into them I don't like to pause for even a second because I have to know the answers, and as soon as humanly possible.  So this one sounds like it'll fit the bill perfectly...I guess I'll just have to clear my schedule when I set out to read it.

Countdown Pick #2:  Cinders and Sapphires (At Somerton, #1) by Leila Rasheed (01/22/2013)

I love these kinds of stories.  The girls at two very different ends of the spectrum is always so compelling.  And hearing the different voices from the different types of characters is always the makings of an excellent narration.  I'm looking forward to hearing all about the romance, the tragedy, the secrets, all of it!

Countdown Pick #3:  Boundless (Unearthly, #3) by Cynthia Hand (01/22/2013)

I know I've talked about this series before but I can't say it enough, how much I've found myself enjoying these installments and Hand's writing.  Her characters are compelling and her writing and pace keep my flying through the pages and wanting to hurry up to the end to see what fate lies in wait for all the characters I've come to love so much.  So while these final installments are always a bit bittersweet, I'll take it because I'm just on the edge of my seat wanting to know how it will all turn out for Clara and her fellow cast of characters.

Countdown Pick #4:  Shades of Earth (Across the Universe, #3) by Beth Revis (01/15/2013)

It's a series that I've unfortunately fallen behind on.  I really enjoyed the series opener, and for some reason wasn't able to squeeze in reading the second installment, but that will have to change.  With this trilogy coming to an end with this final installment, I'm going to do my best to read the sequel either before or very shortly after this one is scheduled to hit the shelves so that I can go from one right to the other.  Once again I always hate to see a series come to a close, but this one sounds like the makings of one heck of an ending, right?

Countdown Pick #5:  The Essence (The Pledge, #2) by Kimberly Derting (01/01/2013)

Here is an example of a series installment that sways to me one side or the other.  For whatever reason, this series has flown under my radar, but when I came across this second installment I seem to have found the right incentive to go back and check out the series from the beginning so that I'll be able to fully enjoy this sequel the way it was meant to be read.  Has anyone read the series opener?  Good reviews, bad reviews?  Let me know.

Review: Unearthly (Unearthly, #1) by Cynthia Hand

Having angel blood run through her veins not only makes her smarter, stronger, and faster than humans (a word, she realizes, that no longer applies to her), but it means she has a purpose, something she was put on this earth to do. Figuring out what that is, though, isn't easy.

Her visions of a raging forest fire and an alluring stranger lead her to a new school in a new town. When she meets Christian, who turns out to be the boy of her dreams (literally), everything seems to fall into place and out of place at the same time. Because there's another guy, Tucker, who appeals to Clara's less angelic side.

As Clara tries to find her way in a world she no longer understands, she encounters unseen dangers and choices she never thought she'd have to make between honest and deceit, love and duty, good and evil. When the fire from her vision finally ignites, will Clara be ready to face her destiny?

Unearthly is a moving tale of love and fate, and the struggle between following the rules and following your heart.

What a page turner! I've got to hand it to Cynthia Hand on this one...it was unique and interesting, compelling and very moving and had me staying up late into the night reading so I could find out what would happen to Clara and the rest of Hand's fantastic characters. I love a good story about Angels, but this time around I'll admit the spin that Hand put on why there are Angels on earth and the "purpose" each of them has really piqued my interest. I was so excited as I read on to see what new clues Clara would be given and how everything would pan out for her and her purpose on Earth.

I will say Tucker took me by surprise. I was all ready to be planted firmly in the Team Christian side of things, and that went right out the window about half way through the book. While I think both characters are great and the way they interact with Clara made for some very interesting and entertaining reading, I'm still going to say that Tucker won me over in the end.

To make matters worse, Hand threw me for a loop with the last quarter of her book. Wow, can you say intense action? I was on the edge of my seat so anxious to see what choices Clara would make, how they would turn out for her and what the consequences of everything would turn out to be. Now of course Hand left her readers with a cliffhanger, and one that has me ready to get to the store so I can pick up where this opener left off, with her second installment, Hallowed. I can't recommend this series opener enough!

Countdown: Romance Edition

Every now and then a girl as to just be a girl and swoon at every page in a romance novel. I love them. I know reality often doesn't work out the ways these novels do, fiction is fiction, but I am a total fan when introduced to a new romance. Romantic comedies always draw me to the movie theaters, but there's just no comparison to a romance novel. A reader's imagination, there's nothing quite like it. So here are a few that I'm looking forward to.

Countdown Pick #1: The Vespertine (The Vespertine, #1) by Saundra Mitchell (3/7/2011)

As a Baltimore native I was super excited to hear about a book based in 1889 Baltimore. I'm very curious to see how Mitchell describes good ol'Baltimore and if I'll know the areas she references. But aside from my Baltimore geekdom, there's romance! Of course it's forbidden which only makes it that much better. I'm already in love with the idea of Amelia and Nathaniel together and book's not even out...what a romantic I am. So with home field advantage, a high stakes romance, and maybe a little bit of fortune telling thrown in, what more could you want in a 2011 debut?

Talk about your love triangle alert? If Hand's main character is thrown into a reality where she's part angel, I can only imagine that coming to grips with news like that would be enough to fill a girl's plate. Add a handsome and wholesome boy she's dreamed of (literally) and a boy, his polar opposite - tempting her at the same time, what do you get? An instant out of me for sure! I'll be curious to see if the part-Angel gives in to the temptation of a bad boy or if the nice guy doesn't end up finishing last...aren't you curious too? Did I mention it's a series opener too?

Countdown Pick #3: Half Moon (The Crescent, #2) by Jordan Deen (1/13/2011)

Now I will admit that I've already gotten the chance to read this (thanks to being a part of the book's blog tour) and it rocked! I included this one on the countdown for a bunch of reasons - but mainly because the copy I read was an electronic galley and I'm counting down until I can get my hands on a copy of my own! But I also wanted to include it because the romance and love triangle in The Crescent series gets turned up (more than a notch in this installment. It's romantic for sure, not to mention much steamier this time around. I melted the whole way through and was totally putty in Jordan Deen's hands!
