Blog Tour: Royally Lost by Angie Stanton & Giveaway

Dragged on a family trip to Europe’s ancient cities, Becca wants nothing more than to go home. Trapped with her emotionally distant father, over-eager stepmother, and a brother who only wants to hook up with European hotties, Becca is miserable. That is until she meets Nikolai, a guy as mysterious as he is handsome. And she unknowingly finds herself with a runaway prince.

Nikolai has everything a guy could ask for-he's crown prince, heir to the throne, and girls adore him. But the one thing he doesn't have...is freedom. Staging a coup, he flees his kingdom and goes undercover on his own European tour.

When Nikolai and Becca meet, it’s their differences that draw them together. Sparks fly as they share a whirlwind of adventures, all the while dodging his royal guard. But Becca's family vacation ends in a matter of days. Will Nikolai and Becca be forced to say goodbye forever, will his destiny catch up to him, or will they change history forever?

Food, food, and more food!

What’s vacation with out food and our recent fascination to take pictures of it? While doing research for Royally Lost, I was amazed at how food is displayed and sold in Europe. There are a lot of open-air markets with food sold in bulk. Here are some pictures from the Naschmarkt in Vienna where Nikolai and Becca spend time.

I love food, and the first thing I do when I get to a new city, is look at the restaurant choices. I’m kind of picky, but I love anything with a good sauce. Germany is known to have a lot of heavy food with sauces, num! And everywhere I went and ordered a Coca-cola light, (not much Diet Pepsi where we traveled) they served it in an old fashioned Coke glass.

Regensberg, Germany supposedly has the world’s oldest sausage kitchen. Of course, we stopped and the food was delicious! They also sold their famous Regensberg mustard. We brought several jars back.

The next city, Nuremberg, also claimed to have the world’s oldest sausage kitchen, too. Hmm. We decided there was probably one in every tourist town.

Thanks so much for hosting me on your blog today. I hope everyone enjoys reading Royally Lost as much as I enjoyed writing it.

Guest Post: Author Jennifer Brown & Giveaway

Born and raised in the Midwest, Jersey Cameron knows all about tornadoes. Or so she thinks. When her town is devastated by a twister, Jersey survives -- but loses her mother, her young sister, and her home. As she struggles to overcome her grief, she's sent to live with her only surviving relatives: first her biological father, then her estranged grandparents.

In an unfamiliar place, Jersey faces a reality she's never considered before -- one in which her mother wasn't perfect, and neither were her grandparents, but they all loved her just the same. Together, they create a new definition of family. And that's something no tornado can touch.

I write books that deal with tough subjects. School shootings, dating violence, cyberbullying, and OCD are just some of the issues that appear in my books. My characters go through harrowing bouts of physical and emotional pain, judgment, fear, confusion, grief, anger. They must be resilient. All of them.

But Jersey Cameron, the character featured in Torn Away, is perhaps the most resilient of all of my characters. She faces a devastating tornado alone. She loses everything she has—house, belongings, the people she loves. She is exhausted and homeless and has no idea what will happen to her next.

But she keeps moving forward. She keeps fighting for herself, even as she realizes she’s the only one left who can and will.

Jersey must face her grief. She must stare down her fears. She must be strong. And she must do these things without shutting down. She must protect herself without closing her heart. She must somehow hang onto hope, even when she feels there is nothing left to hope for.

Jersey was not inspired by a particular person. She was inspired by a group of people. Particularly, she was inspired by the people of Joplin, Missouri, some of whom I got the chance to meet and spend time with after a tornado destroyed much of the town in 2011. I was astounded by the destruction I saw, but I was also astounded by the hope I encountered. People who’d, literally, lost everything they owned were refusing to call it quits. They were cleaning up; they were rebuilding. They were going on with life, because they knew they had to. In this sense, Jersey was inspired by all people who rebuild after their lives are upended.

But in a sense, in the same way that Jersey wasn’t inspired by any one person, the tornado in Jersey’s story wasn’t inspired by any one tornado. In fact, it wasn’t necessarily inspired by a tornado at all. We all have our natural disasters—be they tornados or hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunamis, floods, fires—and we also have our personal disasters. We live through divorces, death of loved ones, car accidents and loss of friends, eating disorders and rape and schizophrenia, and a whole host of personal tragedies that I haven’t even begun to describe. The relentless clutches of depression can take down an individual as swiftly and readily as an ocean wave. Nobody is spared from finding themselves, at some point in their lives, digging out from the rubble in their own personal basements, blinking in the rain, wondering what to do next.

With this in mind, I sought to answer the following question through Jersey: Is it possible to ever lose “everything?” As long as you have that glimmer of hope in your heart, can’t you crawl out of the broken bricks and boards and take a shaky step toward daylight? Call it faith, call it the human spirit, call it whatever you wish—the question is can you be taken down if you desperately hang onto it?

Jersey’s journey after a tornado takes everything attempts to wrestle with that question. In the process, she became a real person to me—a person whom I admire for her strength. Can we all be as resilient as Jersey Cameron? I don’t know, but I know that after spending months with her, I definitely would hope to try.

Burn Out Blog Tour, Author Guest Post & Giveaway!!

A futuristic blend of Beth Revis's Across the Universe and Lenore Appelhans's Level 2, Burn Out will satisfy the growing desire for science fiction with a thrilling story of survival, intrigue, and adventure.

Most people want to save the world; seventeen-year-old Tora Reynolds just wants to get the hell off of it. One of the last survivors in Earth's final years, Tora yearns to escape the wasteland her planet has become after the sun turns "red giant," but discovers her fellow survivors are even deadlier than the hostile environment.

Holed up in an underground shelter, Tora is alone--her brilliant scientist father murdered, her mother and sister burned to death. She dreams of living on a planet with oceans, plants, and animals. Unfortunately, the oceans dried out ages ago, the only plants are giant cacti with deadly spines, and her pet, Trigger, is a gun--one of the bio-energetic weapons her father created for the government before his conscience kicked in.

When family friend, Markus, arrives with mercenaries to take the weapons by force, Tora's fury turns to fear when government ships descend in an attempt to kill them all. She forges an unlikely alliance with Markus and his rag-tag group of raiders, including a smart but quiet soldier named James. Tora must quickly figure out who she can trust, as she must choose between saving herself by giving up the guns or honoring her father's request to save humanity from the most lethal weapons in existence.

Meet JAMES from BURN OUT

James is a quiet soldier who has orders to seize the bio-energetic weapons created by Tora’s father. Tora has sworn to protect the weapons so they don’t fall into enemy hands and struggles with her conflicting feelings toward James. James is also the medic for the army and Tora becomes more confused when he saves her instead of killing her.  In this scene, James uses his profession to express his feelings for Tora.

“How ‘bout here? Does it hurt when I touch here?” he asked in a professional tone, yet both his hands slid down toward my hips and his lips almost touched mine. I was no doctor but this was definitely not part of any medical exam I’d ever seen. My legs turned to jelly and I trembled. When I sighed, James raised a finger to his lips. Oh yeah, the com system.

Ultimately, Tora learns that James has some complicated reasons for being involved in the weapons hunt and that being attracted to him doesn’t mean she can trust him.

Guest Post: Author Deborah Cooke & Giveaway!!

The next generation of shape-shifting dragons from the popular author of the Dragonfire novels.

Zoë Sorensson is perfectly normal, except she's been told she's destined for great things. Zoë's the one female dragon shapeshifter of her kind. But Zoë is at the bottom of the class when it comes to being Pyr and her powers are AWOL, so she's sent to a Pyr boot camp.

Zoë quickly realizes that she has to master her powers yesterday, because the Pyr are in danger and boot camp is a trap. The Mages want to eliminate all shifters and the Pyr are next in line-unless Zoë and her friends can work together and save their own kind.

Catching Up With Zoë and the Dragon Shifters
By Deborah Cooke

Katelyn very kindly invited me to visit her blog again and let you all know what I’m up to. It’s been very busy on my end of things, and not just with writing.

One of the big challenges (and opportunities) available to authors in recent years is that of self-publishing digital editions of books. Many authors have been publishing new content (more about mine below), but I’ve also been lucky enough to have had the rights to many of my back list books revert to me. These are books that were printed by publishers in the past. Many of these titles had never been available in digital editions, so there was an opportunity to find new readers by making them available again. The majority of these books were historical romances published under my pseudonym Claire Delacroix, but there were also eight books published under a short-lived pseudonym, Claire Cross. It seems hard to believe but even ten years ago, we worked on paper, and
with software programs that are no longer supported. Even when I had the book files in digital format, I had only the version that I had delivered to the publisher, not the final edited version, on my hard drive. Those books had to be re-edited and reformatted (if not retyped). It was a lot of fun to have new covers made for those books and get those new editions out in the world—this project included The Bride Quest II, The Rogues of Ravensmuir, The Jewels of Kinfairlie, The Prometheus Project, four time travel romances which are now Claire Delacroix titles, four contemporary romances that are now Deborah Cooke books, and a couple of short stories that had appeared in anthologies. Then we did some digital boxed sets so that readers could catch up for a better price. Phew! :-)

The second thing that I’ve been doing, and this is more recent, is amalgamating my websites and blog in one location. Everything is now at deborahcooke.com—once the links in the backs of my digital books are updated to point to the new book pages and my old blog posts make the transition to the new site, delacroix.net will point to that location too. It’s going to be easier for everyone to have all the books in one place, plus the site matches the new reader newsletter I launched at the end of last year.

I have also managed to publish some new titles in the midst of this endeavor. My medieval romance series The Jewels of Kinfairlie introduced a family of eight siblings, but only three of them had their stories told in that trilogy. Readers have (understandably) wanted to know the rest of the stories, so I’ve introduced a new linked series called The True Love Brides. The first two books in that series—The Renegade’s Heart and The Highlander’s Curse—are both available now, and the next two will be published in 2014. (I’ll be able to spend more time writing now that the back list titles are in good shape.) I’ve also continued the Dragonfire series of paranormal romances: in 2013, I published three linked novellas which follow the adventures of the Dragon’s Tooth Warriors and are time travel romances. Kiss of Danger, Kiss of Darkness and Kiss of Destiny are available individually in digital editions, or together in the DragonLegion Collection in digital or print. The Dragon Legion Collection is Dragonfire #9. In 2014, I’ll publish Thorolf’s story and then Sloane’s story, which will complete this particular Dragonfire cycle. Finally, I’m publishing a new fourth book in my Prometheus Project of urban fantasy romance featuring fallen angel heroes, called Abyss. This gives the continuing character Tupperman his happily-ever-after.

What comes after that? I’m always thinking five years out, and that never changes. I have ideas for a new shorter cycle of Dragonfire (a trilogy) as well as a new medieval romance series of four linked stories. I’m also sketching out an open-ended contemporary romance series of linked books with continuing characters. And then there are the young Pyr...

I first met Katelyn because of the
DragonDiaries trilogy, which was a paranormal YA spin-off from Dragonfire: in that series, we watched Zoë’s coming of age as the new Wyvern of the Pyr. She and her friends were all dragon shape shifters, learning to manage their powers. I became a YA author not so much as a deliberate marketing choice as by a decision to follow the story: I wanted to see Zoë master the challenges before her, and since she was sixteen, her story was a YA. When her trilogy was complete, I knew there was more to tell. My idea was that Zoë, Garrett, Liam and Nick would have new roles to play in the world of shifters working in alliance—and there certainly would be challenges. Since the key to those conflicts would lie in their respective firestorms, their stories would have to be romances, like Dragonfire: I wanted to write the stories but was missing a piece of the puzzle. While I’ve been busily managing my back list, a wonderful thing has happened in the book market: since the completion of Dragon Diaries, an entirely new genre has emerged called New Adult. There’s the missing puzzle piece: we could rejoin the team of new Pyr in their twenties in a New Adult spinoff series, which is what I’m starting to think about now. I know that many of you want to see Nick and Isabelle finally work things out, and so do I. :-)

That’s what I’m up to these days. A long list of projects to complete and a lot of exciting stories to tell. Too bad there are only twenty-four hours in a day!

Thanks so much for inviting me to visit, Katelyn!

Author Interview: Jessica Schein & a Giveaway!!

A new four-book e-novella series featuring four different characters trying to find out the answer to one big question: where is Lizzy Ross?

Book 1: Mimi Lerner and Lizzy Ross have been best friends since high school began and now, as seniors, they've made big plans together—from a trip to the Bahamas only months away to going to college the following year and ruling it like they do high school. But when Lizzy goes MIA after a party Mimi throws at a posh Manhattan hotel, everything is suddenly up in the air and Mimi must face facts: Lizzy Ross may not be the girl she knew, and the life she thought she'd have is going in a very different direction.

Please note that this book ends in a cliffhanger and book 2 will be told by another character.

Keep an eye out for the next installment, as told by a different character, of the Lizzy Ross series in early 2014!

Name three things you loved about writing The Disappearance of Lizzy Ross.

I have to say that I loved writing Mimi’s character. She’s complicated in that she’s incredibly selfish, narcissistic, and yet vulnerable, although she may not think so. She’s also one of the most insecure characters I’ve written and part of how she deals with it is through an addiction to coke. Given that she’s high a lot she’s an unreliable character so it was interesting to see where she’d go and what she’d do.

I also loved seeing where the story would go. I started with a loose outline but the book took twists and turns that not even I could have predicted when I started writing it in May of 2012.

And last but not least, I loved writing the scenes between Jared and Mimi. They have a real rawness between them that I found to be both honest and somewhat disturbing at times.

What's your best advice for someone that wants to be a writer?

Keep going and do it every day. Writing can be a very lonely hobby, process, passion--what have you--and it’s easy to question whether you should keep at it. But if it’s something you love, don’t stop. When I can squeeze in time to write, it’s the best part of my day.

Also, listen to criticism (maybe cry, laugh, and cry again), take it or don’t, and move on. You don’t get anywhere by re-reading reviews, both good and bad, over and over again.

Your debut novel just came out, how does it feel? What was your favorite part of this whole process?

It feels awesome but also, quite frankly, scary. I spent a while creating this story and character using nothing but my imagination, and for a long time, Mimi Lerner was my own. But now she’s out there, and being judged, and while it’s been amazing (and very interesting) to see how people have reacted to her, it’s always a bit gut-wrenching to see someone hate the book because they aren’t a fan of hers.

I don’t know if I can pick a favorite moment of the process but here are some highlights: receiving the cover from my designer who totally nailed it; working closely with my agency’s (Trident) ebook department because they’ve been so amazing and supportive; and reading the reviews, both good and bad. The process never ends!

After spending so many years working in the marketing departments of a number of children's publishing houses, what sticks out the most from the experience? Any useful tidbits that helped while you were working on your own release?

You are your best promoter, especially given the rise of social media over the past few years.  Also, don’t be afraid to try a promotional idea. You may fail but if it works, think about--in the words of Dr. Seuss--the places you’ll go! And last but not least, be genuine on Twitter, Facebook, etc. and don’t be afraid to show your personality.

What's in your reading pile right now? Any recent favorites you'd recommend or tell us to steer clear of?

I’m finishing up Robin Wasserman’s The Walking Dark (hello scary) and prior to that, I adored Gayle Forman’s Just One Day. My favorite YA book of the year, however, is Rainbow Rowell’s
Eleanor & Park. It was absolutely perfect. Next up on my reading shelf is: Jhumpa Lahiri’s The
Lowland, How to Love by Katie Cotugno, and Len Vlahos’ Scar Boys (out in January 2014).

Which literary character is your dog, Owen, named after?

OWEN MEANY FROM JOHN IRVING’S A PRAYER FOR OWEN MEANY. If you’ve read the
book (and everyone should!) you’ll know why I just went caps-crazy. :)

If you could travel anywhere you wanted, where would you go and why? If you could only take three things with you, what would they be and why?

Funny you should ask because my dream trip is happening soon: Hawaii! I work full-time and between that and writing my own stuff I’m super busy. So I’m excited to be taking a ten day
vacation to Oahu over Christmas with my boyfriend where I hope to relax, rest, and relax more. The three things I’ll be bringing are: sunscreen (I had melanoma last year--it was scary and I’m fine but I’m now more than ever a sunscreen devotee); a whole pile of books (see above for the list, as there’s a good chance I don’t get to any of them before the holidays); and my laptop. After all, I have the next book in the Lizzy Ross series, The Search for Lizzy Ross (as told by Jared), to finish!

After school, she spent nearly eight years working in the marketing departments of a number of children’s publishing houses and dreaming of the day she'd publish her own stories. She currently lives in Seattle with her dog, Owen, who is—of course—named after a well-known literary character. When not writing, she can be found cooking, running, doing yoga, or spacing out.

Blog Tour: Relativity by Cristin Bishara

I’m so excited to be participating in the blog tour for Relativity by Cristin Bishara! I’ve got an author guest post and a giveaway for you, so please read on! And don’t forget to check out Relativity, out now!

If Ruby Wright could have her way, her dad would never have met and married her stepmother Willow, her best friend George would be more than a friend, and her mom would still be alive. Ruby knows wishes can't come true; some things just can't be undone. Then she discovers a tree in the middle of an Ohio cornfield with a wormhole to nine alternative realities.

Suddenly, Ruby can access completely different realities, each containing variations of her life—if things had gone differently at key moments. The windshield wiper missing her mother’s throat…her big brother surviving his ill-fated birth…her father never having met Willow. Her ideal world—one with everything and everyone she wants most—could be within reach. But is there such a thing as a perfect world? What is Ruby willing to give up to find out?

If RELATIVTY were made into a movie, who would you cast?

Ruby, the main character, is a bit of a science geek to say the least. She sports an edgy pixie cut and black-rimmed glasses. The tattoo on the back of her neck is of the Einstein tensor, an equation that describes space-time. She’s on a quest through parallel universes in order to find the perfect world.

Ruby’s part would be played by Emily Browning or Nicole Gale Anderson.

George, Ruby’s love interest, is an artist with piercing blue eyes. He’s always got his sketchbook nearby, and Ruby’s got a thing for his buff biceps.
George’s part would be played by Landon Liboiron or Max Thieriot.

Kandy, Ruby’s stepsister, is a fashionista who has a habit of stealing clothes and makeup. She’s described as “psychotic” and “sadistic,” however Ruby also
encounters a friendlier version of Kandy in Universe Six.

Kandy’s part would be played by Taylor Momsen or Ashley Benson.

Patrick, Ruby’s brother, is a football star and is very protective of his little sister, Ruby. He does everything he can to keep things together for her, especially as their home life falls apart.
Patrick’s part would be played by Matt Lanter or Josh Hutcherson.

**How great does that cast sound??  I'm not sure which out of the two I'd choose for these characters, but I think Cristin picked some real winners, don't you think?

On top of everything else this fabulous blog tour has got going on, there's a BONUS giveaway I just can't wait any longer to share with everyone!  Check out the info to the right and you'll find all the details you'll need as well as this super special code that's just for this blog stop...pay attention if you want to win!  You can click on this link to get to the Relativity Facebook page for your chance to enter.

Guest Post & Giveaway: Author Frankie Bailey

Judging a Book by Its Cover

I can only hope my book will be judged by its cover. From the moment I saw the book jacket for The Red Queen Dies, I was in love. The design team – Helen Werner Cox, illustrator; John Hamilton Design; and David Rotstein — had given me a book jacket that not only captures the spirit of the book but also helped me to define what the series will be about.

There he was, the White Rabbit from Alice in Wonderland – who appears in the book as a
pendant that the third victim is wearing when she is found. On the book jacket, the White Rabbit has his pocket watch in one hand and knife in the other.  The knife is an addition to his usual attire, a sly
whimsical twist on a familiar character – a lethal twist, perfect for a mystery.

The White Rabbit with the deadly looking weapon held behind his back helps to make it clear at a
glance that this book is indeed a mystery. The words “a mystery” that appear beneath the title reinforce the fact that this book is a mystery. I was worried about whether the genre of my book would be clear.  When you write a police procedural set in the near-future (2019), there is the possibility that some readers will pick the book up expecting sci-fi or fantasy. If you’re the author of the book, a White Rabbit with a knife in his hand and the words “a mystery” are welcome.

The book jacket helped me to define the series with much more precision. I was already well into
the first draft of the second book – working title, Cock Robin’s Funeral -- when I saw the cover image for The Red Queen Dies. When Marketing shortened the title of my first book --originally The Red Queen’s Last Bow – to the pithy and easy to remember The Red Queen Dies, I was reminded of the value of brevity. Seeing the cover for The Red Queen Dies gave me a visual image that went to the heart of the series I want to write. I already knew that the themes and the titles for future books would be drawn from children literature and folk ballads. But the cover helped me to define the world in which my characters live.

In their world, there is a kind of Wonderland effect that is chronic. In my straight police procedurals, that are neither sci-fi nor fantasy, there is and must be a kind of abnormal normal (for lack of a better expression). I draw heavily on the history of the real Albany, New York, but my world of 2019 and after exist as a parallel universe/alternate reality. In this world, life is not only post-9/11, but postUFO-sighting (2012). Climate change is an everyday fact of life and occasional misery. A good cup of
coffee doesn’t come cheap, and, although the marvels of technology have transformed some lives, the
poor have been left behind. In fact, technology sometimes doesn’t work – blame Mother Nature and lack of money to make repairs. War is on-going. Robots are becoming more common.

It is a world of haves and have nots, and politics -- as always – affects how my cops do their job.
The media are still present and even more pervasive. This is a world in which teenage “space zombies” and “droogie boy” gangs reflect the alienation of near-future youth. This is a world of fear and anxiety and occasional delight. My cops need to have grit, determination, and a sense of humor to solve crimes in this world. That’s what I need to remember as I move through the series. All of this came together in my mind – Eureka! -- when I saw that sly White Rabbit on my book jacket.

Need more enticement? Below you will find an excerpt from book three, The Creators.
Somewhere, James was just as trapped as I was. I thought of the morning when we lay with each other, curled against one another, never beginning and never ending.

How we’d stayed like that till the sun began to rise.

James had reached down and pulled me off the ground. He wore a satisfied grin on his face. “Someone is mighty proud of himself,” I teased.

He laughed. It bounced through the forest, calling it awake. Readying it for the day. “I’m just insanely happy.”
I stood on the tips of my toes and kissed him gently on his scar. “I’m insanely happy too,” I whispered.

James looked down at me, and I was lost all over again. I would never tire of looking into those mismatched eyes. They didn’t make him different. They made him him. He chuckled as he reached over and pulled a leaf from my tangled hair. “They’ll know just by looking at you that we’ve been up to no good.”

“No good?” I purred. “I thought it was very, very good.”

James growled and lifted me into the air. I wrapped my legs around his waist as he pressed his lips hungrily against mine. I moved my hands to his hair, curling my fingers into it, attaching myself to him. I never wanted to let go. Every part of me ached to be touched by him, and every part of me ached to touch him right back.
“Do you know how much I love you?” he breathed into the base of my neck. His lips fluttered against my skin.
I nodded, kissing the top of his head. “As much as I love you.”
James slowly put my feet back on the ground. He cradled my face in his hands. “That will never change. No matter what.”
I looked deep into his eyes. “I know.” Because I did. It was one of life’s few assurances. I would always love James.
I pressed my lips once again to his scar. “I adore this scar,” I whispered, unable to hide the smile that seemed etched on my face all morning.
“You’re enough to drive a man crazy,” he said The tremble of his voice caused my toes to curl. I wanted him again. And again. And again.
My fingers traced the waist of his pants. “Tonight?” I said, knowing full well it was a promise that I probably wouldn’t be able to keep.
James grabbed my hand and brought it to his lips. “Tonight,” he echoed.
As the sun climb higher into the sky, I knew our moment was coming to an end. James reached down and placed his hand over my heart. “Thank you,” he said.
“For what?” I asked, my voice choked with emotion.
“For everything.”
As the memory slipped away, I looked back up at the night sky. Praying and hoping that James knew how much I wanted to thank him too.
For everything.
