I'm always picking up new books, because I never tire of reading, but the other thing I like about this meme is that it gives everyone an opportunity to check out what other book fanatics, bloggers, etc... got for themselves. I've gotten great recommendations from this meme and hope that keeps up in the future.

Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Most Frustrating Characters Ever

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created over at The Broke and the Bookish.  This feature was created because they're particularly fond of lists at The Broke and the Bookish (and who isn't?). They're all about creating new lists including a little bit of everything and I've been meaning to participate for so long but always seemed to get behind.  So here we are and hopefully you'll head over to their page and check out what everyone else put up for this week's Top Ten.

Where to begin?  Just kidding.  But I think we can all agree that from time to time we wish we could knock some sense into a character here or there, or at least be able to give them some of our opinions and advice.  Most of my frustration admittedly seems to revolve around female characters not going straight for the male characters I think they belong with, but not all.  Here are a few of mine.

Top Ten Most Frustrating Character #1:  Celaena - Throne of Glass (Throne of Glass, #1) by Sarah J. Maas

It burns me up when female characters don't go for the male characters (see I told you) I think are perfect for them.  I know best right?  Just kidding, but the frustration is there no matter what, and Celaena was one of those female leads.

Top Ten Most Frustrating Character #2:  Drew - The Watchers series by Veronica Wolff

In Drew's case she not only gravitated towards the "wrong" guys in my opinion, but she ignored the sound advice given to her by trusted friends.  She's impulsive, aggressive and brave; all things I both love about her and what frustrates me to no end.

Top Ten Most Frustrating Character #3:  Trella - Insider series by Maria V. Snyder

No trust!  I get that her character doesn't live in Utopia and is without a lot of friends, but come on.   I realize her character adapted over time and will continue to do so (or at least I hope she will) but at times I wanted to rush the process along a bit faster for my benefit.

Top Ten Most Frustrating Character #4:  Four - Divergent series by Veronica Roth

Too passive aggressive for my nerves.  Watching and observing and a heck of a lot of waiting and the suspense was killing me.  I think it's because Roth made his character so unique.  He was mysterious, surprisingly kind at unexpected moments, complex at others, readers couldn't help but want him to break out of his concealing shell so that we could figure him out for ourselves.

Top Ten Most Frustrating Character #5:  Kylie - Shadow Falls series by C.C. Hunter

Pick Derek!  Please pick Derek!  I don't always go towards the "nice guys" but in Derek's case I do.  He's literature romantic perfection and I'm on his team all the way.  If C.C. Hunter wants to make me happy (because I'm sure that's her goal) than she'll have Kylie and Derek getting their happily ever after.

Top Ten Most Frustrating Character #6:  Clio - Solid series by Shelley Workinger

Big mistake made...almost cost her big time.  Without throwing spoilers into the mix all I can say is that when characters have a good thing going for them, why must they do something they know will screw things up  I realize I'm talking as if the characters are make the decisions for themselves and not the authors, but it's the same concept.  Workinger had me very sad a time or two with the decisions she had Clio making.

Top Ten Most Frustrating Character #7:  King Tohon - Healer series by Maria V. Snyder

Leave Avry alone!  This guy is no good and while that makes him a perfect villain, it frustrates me by leaps and bounds.  He's relentless, smart and cunning, tenacious and out for blood and domination.  He's not going to settle for less than everything so I'm waiting for someone to stop him...hopefully very soon.

Top Ten Most Frustrating Character #8:  Artemis - Artemis Lupine series by Catherine Banks

Each book in the series gave me new frustrations revolving around her character.  Her lack of acceptance, her stubborn streak, and her indecision, you name it and it bugged me at one point or another.

Top Ten Most Frustrating Character #9:  Lacey - The Crescent series by Jordan Deen

Stay away from Alex and go with Brandon.  it's very simple...in fact Deen made it her character's actual destiny by making them mates and she still dug in her heels!  It drove me up the wall and made me want to shake her repeatedly.  I'll admit that she finally came around but it sure seemed like she took her good old time getting there.

Top Ten Most Frustrating Character #10:  Katsa - Graceling series by Kristin Cashore

I get it, I really do.  She had it more than tough growing up, but when it takes characters too long to take down their emotional walls it makes me anxious.  readers end up wanting to help these characters and obviously that's not possible due to the fact that they're fictional of course.  This is where the anxiety turns into frustration.

Countdown: 2012 Releases (13)

I still can't get over how quickly this year is already flying by. It doesn't seem like it was that long ago that I was counting down the days until Summer finally got here, and look at that...here it is. My Summer is already looking jam packed with friends getting married and all the festivities that go along with that. But also exciting is all the great books that are scheduled to hit the shelves.

I can't believe how many great titles are coming out and how badly I want to read them all. I'm not sure how I'm going to manage to fit everything in, but I'm crossing my fingers I'll find a way and at least if I have some traveling to do for these weddings I'll be sure to have plenty of great reads to take a long with me to pass the time, right?

That's the plan anyways and hopefully I'll have some down time as well in between all the fun festivities lined up to squeeze in a book or two on a night in, curled up on my couch unwinding from all the craziness!

Countdown Pick #1: Mirage (Winterhaven, #2) by Kristi Cook (06/05/2012)

Seventeen-year-old Violet McKenna is back for her senior year at Winterhaven, and thrilled to be with Aidan after a long summer apart. But when a violent and disturbing vision begins to haunt her, Violet suddenly feels unsure of everything: who to trust, if she is in danger, and—worst of all—whether she and Aidan are really meant to be together.

As a fan of the first installment in this series, I'm of course looking forward to seeing what is in store this time around for Violet and Aidan. I hadn't been expecting too much out of the series opener for some reason, and it made it all the sweeter when I came to really enjoy myself while reading it. So hopefully Cook has some more exciting twists and turns lined up for her characters, as well as (fingers crossed) a little more romance for two such cute characters.

OK so I know that technically this title will not be out until 2013 so maybe it shouldn't be listed among this countdown, but I'm too excited for this release to wait to post this on another countdown for 2013 releases, so here I am. All of you guys know how much I love and devour every single title that Snyder comes out with and this one I have no doubt will be no different. This new series was a ton of fun, incredibly stress inducing, and an overall excellent start to a series. I am completely confident that Snyder will surely deliver another home run hit with this second installment in the series.

Yep, I'm making up my own rules as I go...hope you guys don't mind. Yes as you can see this title came out at the end of April so no, it's not a title that we can countdown for, but it's one that I'm anxious to read all the same. I think I let this one fall through the cracks possibly because of the title. I've never been a fan of Poe's poems to be honest, or at least he was never a favorite poet of mine, so when I saw the familiar title I lumped it in with his work. After reading the synopsis, I'll admit I'm curious and now anxious to check it out for myself and see what this title is all about. Wish me luck!

Review: Touch of Power (Healer, #1) by Maria V. Snyder

Maria V. Snyder has done it again! To be honest, I'm no longer surprised to find that each of her new books is better than the last. Every time I pick one of her novels up I get this thrill of excitement because I know it's a winner even before I've cracked the cover. Her Poison Study series captured my attention as well as my heart as a reader, and ever since she just keeps on putting her touch of pure magic into her writing. Where do authors come up with these story lines? Magic and healing may have been done before, but no one comes close to touching on Snyder's Healer series. Anyone who tries...well good luck with that, but don't be shocked when you come up short. There's no matching her ability to draw readers in and capture them to the point where they'll start to believe that her worlds actually exist.

I couldn't have been happier to meet Avry and discover yet another literary heroine to add to my list of favorites. She's hard to resist and after a while you won't even know why you tried. Her band of rescuers (so to speak) are just as impossible not to love. But I will say this. After knowing how many ups and downs Snyder can put her readers through by making her characters go through all their paces and insurmountable obstacles, this series by far put me through the ringer. I laughed (a lot) and cried (even more) but really I just couldn't believe how attached I got to these characters. And after only a few pages...I was relating and empathizing with their tales as if they truly were real and my very own friends and family. Ridiculous some may say, but those individuals have never experienced Snyder's magic. And that's the real shame.

Readers who know and love Snyder, won't find this review hard to believe or far fetched in any way, but what they might find shocking is that Snyder managed to having me falling for a character even more than the immortal Valek. I myself did not think that would ever be possible, but she's done it! I won't go into anymore detail because everyone should really experience this one for themselves, without knowing too much going into it. But trust that you won't be disappointed. Now can we please get book two, Scent of Magic, like immediately!

Countdown: New Series (1)

As always my TBR list continues to grow in length each day. I love discovering new books that will be hitting the shelves soon and having the time to let the excitement build until I can't take it any more...I've just got to get my hands on a copy of each book for my very own collection. So once again I found myself exploring the net in search of any new titles that I've missed recently and any new books that are coming out in the next year or two. Well I definitely found some.

I'm always amazed at how many titles hook me from just their covers and short descriptive write ups. Teasers can even be enough some times. I'll admit that while long time favored authors coming out with new series and standalones are always looked into, mainly because if they're previous books were near and dear to me I can almost always count on their future works to hold the same quality I've come to hope for out of these writers. But while favorite authors add to my TBR list, I'm also always anxious to add debut authors or authors I haven't had the chance to experience yet to put on my list as well. So after some fun exploring I'm once again excited all over for another great round of books that I'll be on the look out for when they hit the shelves. Here are just a few...

Countdown Pick #1: Fury (The Fury Trilogy, #1) by Elizabeth Miles (8/30/2011)

Sometimes sorry isn't enough....

It has been said that one look at this cover and you'll be dying to get your hands on a copy of your own. I completely agree. Add to that the fact that there are two other books in this series and I had no hope of resisting. As a fan of the author, Lauren Oliver, when I heard these two were best friends I just couldn't help but hope that their writing was on an equal level as well. So with a lot of anticipation and a greater amount of hope, I'm adding this to my list of must reads.

Countdown Pick #2: Blood Song (Lharmell, #1) by Rhiannon Hart (9/1/2011)

I wanted to turn but I was held captive by the song on the wind. I’m coming, I told the voices. Please, wait for me.

I'm digging the mystery and suspense that goes hand in hand with this title. And when it comes to the fantasy genre I'm almost always on board. I love that anything is possible. It's been called enchanting and magical...what author wouldn't love that kind of praise? And what reader wouldn't want to jump right into the pages of a world like that? I for one want to very much. A world of royalty and unanswered questions, I can't wait to meet and take a journey alongside Zeraphina.

How authors continue to come up with unique takes on vampires I'll never know, but Painter has done just that. Vampire nobility and humans destined and bred to feed them...crazy cool. So when the death of Chrysabelle's vampire is blamed on her, trouble quickly follows. I'm interested to see how her relationship with a vampire outcast comes into play and how it all pans out. Not to mention that I'd like to know what kind of behavior gets a vampire exiled to begin with. Reviews have been saying that Painter takes age old stereotypes and turns them on their heads to create something above and beyond. Sign me up.

Countdown Pick # 4: Pure (Pure, #1) by Julianna Baggott (2/18/2012)

Pressia barely remembers the Detonations or much about life during the Before. In her sleeping cabinet behind the rubble of an old barbershop where she lives with her grandfather, she thinks about what is lost-how the world went from amusement parks, movie theaters, birthday parties, fathers and mothers . . . to ash and dust, scars, permanent burns, and fused, damaged bodies. And now, at an age when everyone is required to turn themselves over to the militia to either be trained as a soldier or, if they are too damaged and weak, to be used as live targets, Pressia can no longer pretend to be small. Pressia is on the run.

Burn a Pure and Breathe the Ash . . .

There are those who escaped the apocalypse unmarked. Pures. They are tucked safely inside the Dome that protects their healthy, superior bodies. Yet Partridge, whose father is one of the most influential men in the Dome, feels isolated and lonely. Different. He thinks about loss-maybe just because his family is broken; his father is emotionally distant; his brother killed himself; and his mother never made it inside their shelter. Or maybe it's his claustrophobia: his feeling that this Dome has become a swaddling of intensely rigid order. When Pressia meets Partridge, their worlds shatter all over again.

Yet another dystopian novel I can't wait to check out. The book's description of the resulting remains of the people who survived the destruction is gruesome to say the least. And to think that no sign of hope awaits them either, just death in one form or another...awful. It's an exciting idea that Pressia takes matters (and her life) into her own hands. And I'll admit that I'm hoping that when she runs into Patridge, sparks fly.

Every book Snyder has written has taken me on an adventure that I don't want to ever end. I was so excited to hear that she was starting a new series, I couldn't contain my enthusiasm. This may not be exactly like her other series' exactly but it rings pretty close to the mark and I can't wait. Mysteries, power unexplained and feared, and a band of rogues at the center of it all. Oh yeah! I haven't heard any hints of a romance, but I'm crossing my fingers that Snyder delivers a love story to rival all her others.
