The new Abby Abernathy is a good girl. She doesn’t drink or swear, and she has the appropriate percentage of cardigans in her wardrobe. Abby believes she has enough distance between her and the darkness of her past, but when she arrives at college with her best friend, her path to a new beginning is quickly challenged by Eastern University's Walking One-Night Stand.
Travis Maddox, lean, cut, and covered in tattoos, is exactly what Abby needs—and wants—to avoid. He spends his nights winning money in a floating fight ring, and his days as the ultimate college campus charmer. Intrigued by Abby’s resistance to his appeal, Travis tricks her into his daily life with a simple bet. If he loses, he must remain abstinent for a month. If Abby loses, she must live in Travis’s apartment for the same amount of time. Either way, Travis has no idea that he has met his match.
So before I start gushing about this title I want to remind everyone that while some sites do refer to this title as a young adult novel, McGuire clearly states that it's a contemporary romance for audiences 17+ years and older. There's something language and adult content throughout the book that places it outside of the young adult genre.
Now that it's clear that this title is not young adult, I can start gushing about this book and the writing McGuire delivers in these pages. I know you guys have come across books in the past that just instantly draw you in and stand out from the rest of the books on your shelves. That's what this book was for me, far and away! McGuire's writing flows naturally throughout the pages and her dialogue will have all her readers feeling like they're hearing the words float off the page, and not just reading the text in front of them.
Her characters are fabulous! Truly people that I wish weren't fictitious and we could all call our friends. Travis and Abby are sensational but the secondary characters were on equal footing and held their own throughout the book. I'll admit that while there was plenty going on throughout these pages, it wasn't nearly enough. When I found out that McGuire has another title coming out in April 2013 that she's called a companion to this title I was over the moon excited! While this title is primarily from Abby's point of view, Walking Disaster (Beautiful, #2) will be the same storyline but from Travis' point of view and I cannot wait to see how that turns out. I love the idea of seeing how things panned out from his eyes and getting a more encompassing picture of what really took place for these amazing characters.
If you had any doubts about this title or author (not sure why you would) you can rest assured that she is the real deal! It's a fresh story, a wonderful read and it's a title that I am sure I will read over and over again. Even still I'm not sure I'll ever get enough of this story or these characters!
I gave Beautiful Disaster (Beautiful, #1) 5 shamrocks!!!!!
