ARC Review: Legacy of the Clockwork Key (Secret Order of the Modern Amusmentists, #1) by Kristin Bailey

A teen girl unravels the mysteries of a secret society and their most dangerous invention in this adventure-swept romance set in Victorian London.

When a fire consumes Meg’s home, killing her parents and destroying both her fortune and her future, all she has left is the tarnished pocket watch she rescued from the ashes. But this is no ordinary timepiece. The clock turns out to be a mechanical key—a key that only Meg can use—that unlocks a series of deadly secrets and intricate clues that Meg is compelled to follow.

Meg has uncovered evidence of an elite secret society and a dangerous invention that some will stop at nothing to protect—and that Meg alone can destroy. Together with the handsome stable hand she barely knows but hopes she can trust, Meg is swept into a hidden world of deception, betrayal, and revenge. The clockwork key has unlocked her destiny in this captivating start to a trilogy.

A pleasant surprise!  After first hearing about this future release, my interest was piqued and I added it to my TBR.  When I received the ARC in the mail I was excited but the release date was a ways off so I put it to the side for a while.  Eventually I jumped in and was glad I had set aside a good bit of time to read because I didn't want to put the book down.

Who doesn't love a good adventure?  The mystery and suspense Bailey weaved around it all only added to its appeal.  Meg and Will were an unlikely pair but eventually I couldn't picture Meg going through it with anyone else.  Added to the mix, Lucinda and a fellow Amusementist and I was feeling like a part of the group myself.  The creativity that Bailey demonstrates by revealing these various "amusements" to her readers was amazing!  The detailed descriptions had me feeling as if I was there and experiencing it all first hand.

The ending threw me a little, but at the same time I was glad I had certain information lined up and figured out.  I do think Bailey could have made this a stand alone instead of a series opener, but I'm certainly not complaining and am really looking forward to seeing where things go next!

I gave Legacy of the Clockwork Key (Secret of the Modern Amusementists, #1) 4 shamrocks!!!!

  1. So glad to read that this one worked for you-I found it less pleasing but I think that might have been partly because of my mood when I read it.
