Guest Post: Author Jennifer Murgia

Young or Not, It’s OK to Crush on YA

When I visit an author’s website, the BIO tab is one of the first things my mouse clicks. I find that little glimpse into their personal life intriguing . . . who are they, really? Are they normal like me? Do they love movies and wearing slippers all day, and visiting the beach . . . because nine times out of ten when we fall in love with a book, we tend to forget the person behind it. That the writer, perhaps alone at their keyboard, sipping coffee, has woven such an intricate world, a story so splendid, we often find ourselves surprised at how normal they really are.

Among my favorites are Robin LaFever, Libba Bray, Cyn Balog, Lauren Oliver, James Dashner and Molly Cochran, in case you wanted to know, and the books they’ve penned hold high regard on my shelf. And with many thanks to Katelyn here at Bookshelf Sophisticate, who has asked me to shed some light on how I got my start as an author, this is a little story on how I fell in love with Young Adult fiction and wrote my own book.

Long ago, I used to read.  And then I had kids.

Don’t get me wrong, I still read a lot—only the books were thick, chunky board books with bright baby-friendly colors and simple sight words. For a long while, I couldn’t find the time to read for myself, and I missed it terribly. Little by little that time presented itself back to me, and, while I was super excited (we’re talking roaming the aisles of B&N with money burning in my pocket excited), I couldn’t quite put my finger on what I wanted to read. I was suddenly lost.

As a teen I had felt the need to immerse myself in intellectual literature –I was almost a grown up, after all, and I had a lot of grown up books to sift through—Anne Rice, Milan Kundera, to name a few. But as an adult, I found myself gravitating toward a genre I’d never explored before, and I was a little nervous about it. What would someone think, finding a grown woman perusing the spines of books in the teen section at the bookstore, choosing not one or two, but as many as five books to take home with her? That was me, slinking around the shelves, pretending to buy gifts for my niece’s instead of loading my arms with books that were for no one else but myself. I devoured A Certain Slant of Light by Laura Whitcomb. It was the first Young Adult book I’d ever read, and it was quickly followed by Spirit by JP Hightman, and A Great and Terrible Beauty  by Libba Bray. To my surprise, I’d finally found a new love. After story time when my children were sound asleep, I’d arm myself with my stash of books! At long last, I had found what was missing – and strangely, something I never saw coming, was that missing link was me.

Young Adult Fiction read by a teen is entertainment and escape . . .  Young Adult Fiction read by an adult is something else entirely. It’s a portal where the person you used to be, or thought you were, still thrives and smiles from between the pages, reminding you she’s still there. I’ve quickly learned why I loved this genre so much, realizing how your teenage years shape you. Those were years of many firsts: first kiss, first love, loyal friends, feelings and emotions too large to ignore. You’re no longer a kid, yet not quite an adult. You still believe in magic and the impossible, and those few years before you’re thrust into the adult world are ones you’ll never forget. A lifetime can sift past, but inside, those years are what count. Those are the ones you wish you could relive.

I realized that those years had prepared me for who I am today, and as much as I’d like to believe I’ve grown up and changed, I’m still that girl. I’m still waiting for something brilliant and beautiful to happen with my life, because after all, I too believed in magic. And that’s when it hit me—something  I hadn’t done in a long time, but always wanted, something that no matter how old I got, or how hectic my life became—wouldn’t go away. Writing.

The summer of 2007 brought an idea to mind—a love between a very normal girl and a boy, who was more than human. The love they shared was unconditional, only it was impossible. And while they couldn’t really be together, they were with each other constantly. That idea became my first book Angel Star. Lemniscate followed a year later, and this month, I’ll put the finishing touch on my series with a prequel—a little novella called The Bliss. Exactly two weeks from the release, I’ll release another YA novel, but don’t worry I’ll share that soon!

That girl inside me? She never went away. She’d been waiting patiently for me to discover another first—writing. She urged me to wake up and realize a dream I had once felt slip away was still very much alive. She urged me to see that girl I once was, embrace her, and take her youth and spirit and sense of humor, and place her between pages and paragraphs, and watch her grow all over again. And I’ll be forever grateful I did.

**Thank you so much for stopping by the blog today Jennifer!!!!  It's always great to have you and please come back really soon!  If you guys haven't checked out her Angel Star series get on that immediately and check out her recent prequel to the series, The Bliss!

Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Spring 2013 TBR Books

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created over at The Broke and the Bookish.  This feature was created because they're particularly fond of lists at The Broke and the Bookish (and who isn't?). They're all about creating new lists including a little bit of everything and I've been meaning to participate for so long but always seemed to get behind.  So here we are and hopefully you'll head over to their page and check out what everyone else put up for this week's Top Ten.

You guys know how much I love my countdowns so this week's TTT was so much fun for me.  Not an easy task to get my HUGE list of countdowns down to just ten, but I decided the first ones that came to mind would make the list and the others would get their due later on when I'd gotten the chance to read and review the titles.

Spring 2013 Pick #1:  Revenge of the Girl with the Great Personality by Elizabeth Eulberg

A hilarious new novel from Elizabeth Eulberg about taking the wall out of the wallflower so she can bloom.

Don't mess with a girl with a Great Personality.

Everybody loves Lexi. She's popular, smart, funny...but she's never been one of those girls, the pretty ones who get all the attention from guys. And on top of that, her seven-year-old sister, Mackenzie, is a terror in a tiara, and part of a pageant scene where she gets praised for her beauty (with the help of fake hair and tons of makeup).

Lexi's sick of it. She's sick of being the girl who hears about kisses instead of getting them. She's sick of being ignored by her longtime crush, Logan. She's sick of being taken for granted by her pageant-obsessed mom. And she's sick of having all her family's money wasted on a phony pursuit of perfection.

The time has come for Lexi to step out from the sidelines. Girls without great personalities aren't going to know what hit them. Because Lexi's going to play the beauty game - and she's in it to win it.

Elizabeth Eulberg will forever be one of my all time favorite authors so when I come across any future title of hers there is no doubt in my mind that it will get priority over the majority of the other books I've got to read.  I can't help it.  I fly through her books and fall in love with each of her characters and her witty writing.  It's addictive and I'm super excited to check this one out in March.

Spring 2013 Pick #2:  MILA 2.0 (MILA 2.0, #1) by Debra Driza

Mila 2.0 is the first book in an electrifying sci-fi thriller series about a teenage girl who discovers that she is an experiment in artificial intelligence.

Mila was never meant to learn the truth about her identity. She was a girl living with her mother in a small Minnesota town. She was supposed to forget her past —that she was built in a secret computer science lab and programmed to do things real people would never do.

Now she has no choice but to run—from the dangerous operatives who want her terminated because she knows too much and from a mysterious group that wants to capture her alive and unlock her advanced technology. However, what Mila’s becoming is beyond anyone’s imagination, including her own, and it just might save her life.

Mila 2.0 is Debra Driza’s bold debut and the first book in a Bourne Identity–style trilogy that combines heart-pounding action with a riveting exploration of what it really means to be human. Fans of I Am Number Four will love Mila for who she is and what she longs to be—and a cliffhanger ending will leave them breathlessly awaiting the sequel.

Debut author challenge anyone?  An exciting read and one that can count towards the challenge goal as well!

Spring 2013 Pick #3:  The Bliss by Jennifer Murgia

Like his fallen brother Lucifer, Hadrian has been ordered by his fellow angels into a reflective state know as the Bliss.

Having also grown enamored by the same darkness that inhabits human souls, he feels that Lucifer's banishment was too severe.

Forever influenced by that horrific event, Hadrian vows revenge and ventures to Earth to follow him, unwittingly starting an eternal competition for the control of human and angelic souls alike.

In this Angel Star novella, THE BLISS will show how the battle between dark and light truly began.

Finally another installment in the Angel Star series.  A prequel to fill readers in on how it all came to be.  Who could ask for more than that?

Spring 2013 Pick #4:  The Heart of the Ancients (Kailmeyra, #3) by Elizabeth Isaacs

I don't have a description of a cover image for this pick which is a bummer I know but I'm still looking forward to it.  I think Isaacs is a very underplayed author and her series so far has been phenomenal.  So glad I came across it and I'm eager to continue.

Spring 2013 Pick #5:  Hunted (The Guardian Legacy, #3) by Ednah Walters

Bran and Lil may have escaped an attempt to lure Lil to the dark side, and recovered the contracts damned people signed with Bran when he was a soul collector, but someone forgot to tell them that no one switches sides or cancels contracts without consequences.

Hunted by an unknown but powerful enemy, Lil, Bran and the Guardians must seek help from unlikely sources to avert total annihilation of the Guardians. When they finally face their enemy, one of them may have to make the ultimate sacrifice.

A great series, fresh and fast paced writing and characters that feel like friends.  I'm eager to check this one out and also glad to know that it won't be the final installment in the series and that there's still more in store for readers and fans alike when it comes to these guardians and the battles they face.

Spring 2013 Pick #6:  The Rules (Project Paper Doll, #1) by Stacey Kade

1. Never trust anyone.

2. Remember they are always searching.

3. Don’t get involved.

4. Keep your head down.

5. Don’t fall in love.

Five simple rules. Ariane Tucker has followed them since the night she escaped from the genetics lab where she was created, the result of combining human and extraterrestrial DNA. Ariane’s survival—and that of her adoptive father—depends on her ability to blend in among the full-blooded humans in a small Wisconsin town, to hide in plain sight at her high school from those who seek to recover their lost (and expensive) “project.”

But when a cruel prank at school goes awry, it puts her in the path of Zane Bradshaw, the police chief’s son and someone who sees too much. Someone who really sees her. After years of trying to be invisible, Ariane finds the attention frightening—and utterly intoxicating. Suddenly, nothing is simple anymore, especially not the rules…

Spring 2013 Pick #7:  The Loop by Shandy Lawson

Ben and Maggie have met, fallen in love, and died together countless times. Over the course of two pivotal days—both the best and worst of their lives—they struggle again and again to resist the pull of fate and the force of time itself. With each failure, they return to the beginning of their end, a wild road trip that brings them to the scene of their own murders and into the hands of the man destined to kill them.

As time circles back on itself, events become more deeply ingrained, more inescapable for the two kids trapped inside the loop. The closer they come to breaking out, the tighter fate’s clutches seem to grip them. They devise a desperate plan to break free and survive the days ahead, but what if Ben and Maggie’s only shot at not dying is surviving apart?

I'm a girl that enjoys a good time travel tale but this one sounds different from anything I've come across before.

Spring 2013 Pick #8:  Furious by Jill Wolfson

Three high school girls become the avenging Furies of Greek legend.

We were only three angry girls, to begin with. Alix, the hot-tempered surfer chick; Stephanie, the tree-hugging activist; and me, Meg, the quiet foster kid, the one who never quite fit in. We hardly knew each other, but each of us nurtured a burning anger: at the jerks in our class, at our disappointing parents, at the whole flawed, unjust world.

We were only three angry girls, simmering uselessly in our ocean-side California town, until one day a mysterious, beautiful classmate named Ambrosia taught us what else we could be: Powerful. Deadly. Furious.

A little mythology thrown into a modern day high school scenario...yes please!  I've always enjoyed spins on Greek and Roman mythology but the Furies are a set I've read very little about and look forward to changing that with this upcoming release.

Spring 2013 Pick #9:  Rise (Eve, #3) by Anna Carey

How far will you go when you have nothing left to lose?

When she lost her soul mate, Caleb, Eve felt like her world had ended. Trapped in the palace, forced to play the part of the happy, patriotic princess of The New America—and the blushing bride of her father's top adviser—Eve's whole life is a lie. The only thing that keeps her going is Caleb's memory, and the revolution he started.

Now, Eve is taking over where Caleb left off. With the help of Moss, an undercover subversive in the King's court, she plots to take down The New America, beginning with the capital, the City of Sand. Will Eve be able to bring about a new, free world when she's called upon to perform the ultimate act of rebellion—killing her father?

In Rise, Eve must choose who to leave behind, who to save, and who to fight as Anna Carey's epic tale of romance and sacrifice in the chilling dystopia of The New America comes to a stunning conclusion.

The end is near.  It's been described as a stunning conclusion and I'm afraid of what I might find.  I need to get through the second installment quickly so I'm ready to go when this title comes out in April.

Spring 2013 Pick #10:  If You Find Me by Emily Murdoch

THERE ARE SOME THINGS YOU CAN'T LEAVE BEHIND ...

A broken-down camper hidden deep in a national forest is the only home fifteen-year-old Carey can remember. The trees keep guard over her threadbare existence, with the one bright spot being Carey's younger sister, Jenessa, who depends on Carey for her very survival. All they have is each other, as their mentally ill mother comes and goes with greater frequency. Until that one fateful day their mother disappears for good, and the girls are found by their father, a stranger, and taken to re-enter the "normal" life of school, clothes and boys.

Now, Carey must come to terms with the truth of why their mother spirited them away ten years ago, while haunted by a past that won't let her go ... a dark past that hides many a secret, including the reason Jenessa hasn't spoken a word in over a year. Carey knows she must keep her sister close, and her secrets even closer, or risk watching her new life come crashing down.

A darker read from the sound of it than I'm typically drawn to, but a compelling one regardless and I'm looking forward to the change of pace.
