While it might not feel like Summer is right around the corner right now it's not that far away. May might mark the beginning of Summer and all the fun that comes with it, but when June rolls around I'm always ready to get into the full swing of things. I'm ready to pack up my cold weather clothing and instead of curling up on the sofa with a book I'd rather take one out either poolside or to the beach. Who doesn't like to lay around in the sun and enjoy a great book at the same time? I've been known to like to grab a tan and soak up the sun but I can only lie around in the heat for so long without getting antsy so that's when I pull out the good books. They get me through the hotter temperatures and keep me entertained while I try to get all the vitamin D a girl could want. What's on your June 2013 list to pick up at your favorite bookstores?
Countdown Pick #1: Hidden (Avena, #1) by Marianne Curley (06/25/2013)
For as long as Ebony can remember, she's been sheltered. Confined to her home in a secluded valley, home-schooled by her protective parents, and limited to a small circle of close friends. It's as if she's being hidden. But something is changing in Ebony. Something that can't be concealed. She's growing more beautiful by the day, she's freakishly strong, and then there's the fact that she's glowing.
On one fateful night, Ebony meets Jordan and she's intensely drawn to him. It's as if something explodes inside of her--something that can be seen from the heavens. Ebony still doesn't know that she's a stolen angel, but now that the heavens have found her, they want her back.
Ooh does this sound like a good read or what?! I'm always drawn to the books where Angels are the center of attention so to speak and the idea of stolen Angels would be a first for me. I'm anxious to see what the main character and of course this boy Jordan are about to get into and what Heaven will do to get this Angel back.
Countdown Pick #2: The Moon and More by Sarah Dessen (06/04/2013)
Luke is the perfect boyfriend: handsome, kind, fun. He and Emaline have been together all through high school in Colby, the beach town where they both grew up. But now, in the summer before college, Emaline wonders if perfect is good enough.
Enter Theo, a super-ambitious outsider, a New Yorker assisting on a documentary film about a reclusive local artist. Theo's sophisticated, exciting, and, best of all, he thinks Emaline is much too smart for Colby.
Emaline's mostly-absentee father, too, thinks Emaline should have a bigger life, and he's convinced that an Ivy League education is the only route to realizing her potential. Emaline is attracted to the bright future that Theo and her father promise. But she also clings to the deep roots of her loving mother, stepfather, and sisters. Can she ignore the pull of the happily familiar world of Colby?
Emaline wants the moon and more, but how can she balance where she comes from with where she's going?
Sarah Dessen's devoted fans will welcome this story of romance, yearning, and, finally, empowerment. It could only happen in the summer.
The last line of this book's description says it all! I've never had the chance to read Dessen's work before (I know I know!) but I've wanted to rectify that for some time now. I'm hoping that this book will help me see what so many other readers have fallen in love with in Dessen's writing and will put me on the path to wanting to read many more titles by the oh so very popular author.
Countdown Pick #3: Pledged (Soul Wars Saga, #1) by Gwynneth White (06/13/2013)
Everyone has a soul mate. But what do you do when your soul mate would rather give his soul to the demons than be with you?
Seventeen-year-old Erin has a problem. Seth has been hers forever, but now an ancient curse is tearing him away. And the demons who invoked it will stop at nothing – even murder – to claim him as their own.
How can she win against a curse so binding that it has damned countless others to this same fate – an eternity alone?
The answer lies in the past. To find it, Erin and Seth must risk all, travelling back in time to a dangerous world where love is forbidden, and life – and death – hang on a pledge.
Follow Erin and Seth as they travel to ancient Shenaya and confront the curse that has plagued their families for millennia. Caught in a war between the Angelic Guardians and the Gefallen, the disembodied dead, they must fight to keep their souls in tact and their love untainted.
I'm already rooting for these two and crossing my fingers that they get the happy ending that so many in their families didn't from the sound of things. I'm hopeful that while this read will probably put readers through an emotional roller coaster ride from start to finish that if not with the series opener, at least by the end of the saga, happily ever after will be more than a possibility.
Countdown Pick #4: In the After by Demitria Lunette (06/25/2013)
They hear the most silent of footsteps.
They are faster than anything you've ever seen.
And They won't stop chasing you...until you are dead.
Amy is watching TV when it happens, when the world is attacked by Them. These vile creatures are rapidly devouring mankind. Most of the population is overtaken, but Amy manages to escape—and even rescue “Baby,” a toddler left behind in the chaos. Marooned in Amy’s house, the girls do everything they can to survive—and avoid Them at all costs.
After years of hiding, they are miraculously rescued and taken to New Hope, a colony of survivors living in a former government research compound. While at first the colony seems like a dream with plenty of food, safety, and shelter, New Hope slowly reveals that it is far from ideal. And Amy soon realizes that unless things change, she’ll lose Baby—and much more.
Rebellious, courageous, and tender, this unforgettable duo will have you on the edge of your seat as you tear through the pulse-pounding narrow escapes and horrifying twists of fate in this thrilling debut from author Demitria Lunetta.
Another debut to add to the list. This one will likely keep me up at night and scare me out of my wits but I'm hopeful that it will all be worth it and I'll have a new favorite author to add to my list as well.
Countdown Pick #5: Another Little Piece by Kate Karyus Quinn (06/11/2013)
A reckless wish taken from the darkest desires of the heart…
A bloody razor engraved with the names of the girls who turned to dust…
An endless cycle that feeds of loneliness and craves destruction…
Together, these pieces form a twisted puzzle that Annaliese Rose Gordon has to solve. Trapped in a body that isn’t hers—with no memory of how she got there—she must unlock the secrets of her past in order to escape the horrors of her future.
I love the sound of this mystery and the fact that it's yet another debut for 2013 makes it all the more exciting. All these new authors coming up with such unique and exciting new ideas and plots has me over the moon excited and extremely anxious to get started. I've added this title to my DAC list, have you?
